Here are some examples of art restoration projects: Back to Page 1 restoration projects

Paper conservator - before Paper conservator - after
Over many years the poor quality card backing
caused severe discolouration of the sky etc on this watercolour.

Routine treatment de-acidified the paper and
restored the original values of
the flesh tones and sky.

Paper restoration Paper restoration after
A watercolour done on cheap, brittle, thin card,
with a line of rot from between the
old wood back-boards. Fox marked.
Soaked in enzymes to remove ultra-thin paper
from degraded backboard.
Mounted on to acid-free rag board, and retouched.

This chromolithograph had been rolled and
then crushed, causing severe vertical cracks
in the brittle paper.
After aqueous treatment and mounting with paste
on to thin Japanese paper,
the damage has all but disappeared.
Painting Restoration example - before Painting restoration example - after
An Irish "basso relief" watercolour which had become very discoloured, with abrasion to the bird's wing and head. Water treatment was not possible, so the minimum of necessary overpainting was applied to the background, eye, etc.
Fine Art restoration project Fine art restoration project after
Broken glass and dirty water staining had
somewhat defaced this watercolour
of the M.V. Orion.
After prolonged soaking and selective
gentle bleaching treatment it looked
presentable again.
Picture restorers project - before Picture restorers project - after
A lively Colonial period lithograph with tears, scratches
and holes, plus some bad water-stain "tide marks".
After water washing and mild bleaching, followed, as always, by hours of washing to remove all chemical residues.
Restore a drawing - before Restore a drawing - after
This "Jazz Band" sketch had begun to crumble
and rot away  stored in a damp garage.
Multiple moulds and very weak.
Careful bleaching lightened and sterilised the paper.
Liquid paper pulp was used to
fill missing areas top edge.
Restoration of an Antique Map Restore an Antique Map
A beautiful 400 year old map by John Speed, suffering from mishandling when weakened by mould. It had previously been 'repaired' using Evo-stick type adhesive! Modern adhesive was removed, and it was then deacidified and lightly cleaned. The missing areas were restored with liquid paper pulp. Facsimile retouching to borders.
